FERN: The Story of Two Branches: Unionid Freshwater Mussels

ICYMI: The FERN Newsletter has been released!

Stream invertebrates are an overlooked but vital component of freshwater ecosystems. Assessing and monitoring their health and condition is an important tool that communities use to assess water quality, and yet an important member of the invertebrate community - Unionid freshwater mussels - are often excluded in regular monitoring.

Undergraduate thesis researchers and HHL Alumni Dante Bresolin (2021) and Nolan Lachance (2023) embarked on a mission to investigate the relationships between mussel communities of the Sydenham River. Both studies informed the Masters theses and publications by Roland Eveleens (2020) and Julia Willsie (2023). Congratulations to Dante for having her first publication accepted from this work!
